For Walter Ulbricht, the East German leader at the time, the tower was also a symbol of the superiority of the socialist society. Every year, more than a million visitors ascend to the top of the TV tower, home to its rotating restaurant, and enjoy seeing the hustle and bustle of the city from more than 200 metres above the city.
