Kostanjevica na Krki - Slovenia's Unique Island Town

Explore Slovenia's Unique Island Town: Kostanjevica na Krki
Nestled in southeastern Slovenia, Kostanjevica na Krki is a captivating destination just a short distance from Novo mesto and approximately 70 kilometres from the capital, Ljubljana. As the smallest town in Slovenia and the only one located on an island, it offers a tranquil escape along the serene banks of the Krka River.

Accessible via a picturesque oak bridge that adds a sprinkle of magic to your arrival, this charming town boasts rich history, having never been fortified by defensive walls. Its natural island setting has served as its sole line of defense, inspiring countless artists and historical figures throughout the years. This captivating heritage has earned Kostanjevica na Krki a distinguished place in the Association of Historic Towns of Slovenia.

Culture lovers will be enchanted by the majestic Cistercian monastery, now home to the Božidar Jakac Art Gallery, one of Slovenia’s largest art institutions. The museum features permanent exhibitions showcasing works by prominent Slovenian artists from the early 20th century and the Pleterje Collection of European painters. The former monastery church, the Lapidarium, and the Grand Gallery host prestigious contemporary art projects, while the Forma Viva Open Air Wood Sculpture Collection, created during the International Sculpture Symposium, adorns the surrounding area.

Beyond its cultural allure, a vast network of cycling and walking routes awaits exploration. What is more, the Krka River transforms into a playground for swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, boating and camping. And for those with a taste for adventure, the Kostanjevica Karst Cave beckons with its stunning limestone formations, showcasing Slovenia’s magical subterranean wonders. Nearby, the Krakovo Forest—the country’s largest lowland floodplain forest—invites you to discover the awe-inspiring Cvelbar Oak, Slovenia’s second-thickest oak tree. Also the Gorjanci Hills provide endless opportunities for outdoor adventures.

Kostanjevica na Krki is also home to the first wine cooperative in the Posavje region. At the Cviček Cellar within the Božidar Jakac Art Gallery, visitors can immerse themselves in local life, discover the history of winemaking, and savor exquisite wines. Established in 2004, this cooperative unites 12 leading producers of Cviček from Dolenjska, ensuring exceptional quality and a controlled geographical origin. Another culinary highlight is the Jelenič Winery, where Marjan Jelenič crafts award-winning wines that reflect the integrity and quality of his artistry.

Buenas !!
